The Geita
Regional was established under section 6 of the Regions and Districts
(Establishment order Procedure) Act, cap 397, RE 2012. The President’s order of
establishing Geita Region was advertised to the public by Government Gazette
Notice No. 72 of 2nd March 2012.The town of Geita is the Capital.
The Geita
Region Commissioner took oath on 21st March 2012 while the Regional
Administrative Secretary took oath on 24th March 2012 and they both
arrived in the Region on 3rd April 2012.
The Region was established from parts of Shinyanga, Kagera
and Mwanza Regions and is administratively divided into five Districts of
Geita, Bukombe, Chato, Nyang'hwale and Mbogwe. The region's districts are
divided into divisions which in turn are subdivided into wards. The ward
consists of certain number of villages or sub villages/mitaas. The region is
made up of 18 divisions, 98 wards, 463 villages and 30 sub villages/mitaas.
Distribution of the Regional Population between the Districts, Geita Region.
According to the 2012 National population and Housing Census, the
Regional total number of 1,739,530 people of which 861,055 were males and
878,475 were females as shown in the table below:

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
The region lies between latitude 2˚ 8 and 3˚28́ south of the equator and
longitude 31˚15́ - 32˚40́ East of Greenwich. The Region is 1,100 to 1300 meter above sea level and shares borders
with Kagera Region to the West and North; while to the South and South Eastern
parts border Shinyanga Region and Mwanza Region to the North.
The total surface area occupied by Geita Region is 21,879 Sq Kms, out of
this area 1,150 Sq Kms (5.3%) is covered by water, dominated by Lake Victoria.
This leaves only 20,729 (94.7%) Sq Kms of dry land.
The region has a moderate Temperature of between average of 22˚C to
30˚C, the Region gets an average of 900mm-1200mm of rainfall per annum, which
normally rains from late September to January and between March and mid of
May.

Geita Region is characterized by undulating land spotted with hills and
Mountains. The region is famous producer of Cotton, Paddy, Groundnuts, Sorghum,
Maize, Cassava, Sweet potatoes, Pineapples, Chick pea, Sunflowers, Lentils and
Coffee. Free range and tethering systems are prominently used for cattle, goats
and sheep as a grazing system. This includes some parts of Chato District
in Buseresele, Buzilayombo and Nyamilembe Division and Geita District in
Bugando and Busanda Divisions.
